Two EU-funded opportunities for European organic food and beverage companies in 2019

Asian consumers are becoming more aware of food’s role in a healthy lifestyle. Organic food products are on the rise and imports can make up for a large share of the local markets.

In Singapore, more than 90% of the food consumed is imported, and the Country’s organic food and beverage market is expected to reach € 208 million by 2021. For European companies in the food sector, selling to Singapore is a straightforward process, since the imports of organic foods can be done for products certified internationally, without any need for additional local certifications.

Thailand, whose market size for organic food and beverages was € 13.69 million in 2017, has also seen a steady increase in the organic food and beverage market over the past years, as a result of a growing demand from high-income consumers. Top consumer preferences in Thailand include organic rice, tea, apples, dried fruits and nuts.

The consumption of organic products is on a continuous rise in Korea as well. This is the 16thlargest market in the world by value on the organic packaged food and beverage segment, and the second organic food market in Asia. As 75% of the ingredients used for organic food processing are imported, business opportunities for European businesses in Korea are vast.

Furthermore, products from Europe are generally considered as quality premium products, and European companies can leverage on from the strong branding of the EU’s organic label, not to mention the fact that most of the tariffs have been removed or will soon be under the EU-Korea Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and the recently signed EU-Singapore FTA.

If your company wants to expand into South East Asia and Korea, then EU Gateway | Business Avenues is the Programme that suits your needs. This flagship EU-funded initiative helps European companies to establish long-lasting business collaborations in Asia, also supporting the smaller European businesses to grow internationally.

With over 20 years of experience, the Programme has built expertise and trust in Asia, and provides a full package of business services and matchmaking to European companies eager to conquer new markets.

To get business going, a good starting point is taking part in the EU Gateway | Business Avenues Organic Food & Beverage missions: there are two scheduled for 2019, open to a total of 100 European companies. Asian buyers know that companies participating in this Programme have been carefully selected and represent the best in European organic food & beverage.  Dedicated teams in Europe and Asia will help selected European companies sound out business opportunities, pre-arrange meetings with targeted potential partners in South East Asia and Korea, and provide hands-on coaching before and during the mission, leaving the stage to the EEN Agrofood sector group for follow-up services once the missions have concluded.

From 1 to 7 September 2019, up to 50 European companies will be a part of the EU-funded business mission to Singapore & Thailand. The 7-day mission week will be an opportunity for participating companies to hold business-to-business meetings with key food and beverage buyers and partners in Singapore. In Thailand, the business exhibition days will take place within Food & Hotel Thailand, the leading trade-only food & hospitality event in Thailand. Over 30,000 visitors are expected to visit the venue and participating companies will have an exhibition booth at the fair. The deadline to apply online to this unmissable opportunity is 17 May 2019.

The EU-funded business mission to Korea will take place from 18 to 22 November 2019 in Seoul, and is open to up to 50 European companies as well. The five-day mission week includes business-to-business meetings, site visits, a business networking reception, and two days of built-up booth exhibitions before Food Week Korea, one of the biggest food business exhibitions in the country. In 2017, the event attracted over 40,000 visitors and is expecting higher numbers in 2019. The deadline to apply online to this unmissable opportunity is 14 June 2019.

Participants to both business missions also receive widespread promotion on the local markets, logistical and financial support, to ensure they have a chance to establish long-term partnerships and acquire new customers.
